How the conversion works
Concept2 publishes the power relation the PM5 uses. With pace measured in seconds per metre:
watts = 2.80 / pace³
Which rearranges to pace = ∛(2.80 / watts). A 500m split is just that pace multiplied by 500. Everything on this page is that one equation, presented four ways.
The cube is the part worth internalising. Power scales with the cube of speed, so going a second per 500 faster costs far more at 1:35 than it does at 2:05. It is also why a small, sustained drop in watts across the back half of a piece shows up as a much smaller-looking change in split — and why watching watts per stroke tells you things watching the split does not.
The calorie figure uses Concept2's own formula, kcal/hr = (watts × 4 × 0.8604) + 300. The constant stands in for resting metabolism, which is why a monitor's calorie count always runs higher than a heart-rate estimate.
One thing no calculator can do for you: pace is not comparable across drag factors unless you keep them the same. The drag factor guide covers why, and the pace chart has the whole table if you would rather scan than type.
